NOTE ATTRIBUTABLE TO THE SPOKESPERSON OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY

On 21 September 2009 the President of the United Nations General Assembly, H.E. Dr. Ali Abdussalam Treki, met with Her Excellency Dr. Susan E. Rice, Permanent Representative of the United States of America to the United Nations, in her capacity as President of the United Nations Security Council for the current month.
The meeting was in line with relevant General Assembly resolutions stipulating periodic meetings between the President of the General Assembly and the Presidents of the principal organs of the United Nations.
President Treki and Amb. Rice discussed issues on this month's agenda of the United Nations Security Council that overlap with those on the agenda of the sixty-fourth Session of the General Assembly. They exchanged views on how to foster cooperation and enhance mechanisms of consultation between the two principal organs, taking into consideration the fact that the United Nations Security Council has primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security while the General Assembly is the chief deliberative policy making organ of the Organization.Also on 21 September, President Treki met with H. E. Mr. Jean Ping, Chairperson of African Union (AU) Commission. Dr. Treki and Mr. Ping discussed African priorities in the context of the agenda of the sixty-fourth Session of the General Assembly. They exchanged views on the special needs of Africa particularly on peace and security, development and investments. Mr. Ping congratulated Dr. Treki on his election as President of the sixty-fourth Session of the United Nations General Assembly.
