The President of the United Nations General Assembly, Dr. Ali Abdussalam Treki, has been consulting Member States, all groups and key stakeholders on the various issues on the agenda of the 64th Session of the General Assembly.

On 16 September 2009, Dr. Treki met with Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. They discussed priorities of the 64th Session. The United Nations Secretary-General briefed the President of the General Assembly on the preparations of the high level events being organized on the margin of the General Debate, including the Summit on Climate Change Summit convened on 22 September 2009. They also discussed a number of other issues, including the preparation for the 2010 Summit to review the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). President Treki stressed to the Secretary-General that he would like to focus on the many areas of the work of the United Nations, including the reform of the UN, in particular in enhancing the role of the General Assembly and increasing the coordination between the different components of the UN system. Dr. Treki also highlighted the need for the international community to respond effectively to the challenges facing the developing countries. President Treki and Secretary-General Ban also exchanged views on the Middle East and the best means to resume negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians.

On 17 September 2009 the Troika of the Non-Aligned Movement composed of Cuba, Egypt, and Iran, briefed President Treki on the priorities of NAM as contained in the final declaration adopted by XV Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement in Sharm El Sheikh. The NAM Troika pledged to support the work of the President of the 64th Session of the General Assembly. They also gave Dr. Treki the declaration adopted by the Heads of state and Heads of Government on the Palestinian question, on commemorating Nelson Mandela Day and ending the embargo on Cuba.

On 17 September 2009 Ms. Karen Abou Zaid, Commissioner General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) for Palestine Refugees in the Near East  briefed the President of the General Assembly on the high level meeting for the commemoration of 60 years of the work of UNRWA. Ms. Abou Zeid outlined difficulties the agency is facing.  President Treki promised that he would attend the commemoration.
