President Treki statement following the plenary meeting on the humanitarian situation in Pakistan

The President of the General Assembly, H.E. Dr. Ali Abdussalam Treki convened a plenary meeting today in view of the unprecedented humanitarian disaster in Pakistan.

The President of the General Assembly is heartened by the strong response by the General Assembly to this extraordinary situation. High-level participants and other senior representatives of Member States expressed strong commitments of support. The Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution on “Strengthening emergency relief, rehabilitation, reconstruction and prevention in the wake of devastating floods in Pakistan” in solidarity with the affected populations and urged for provision of international emergency and long term assistance.

Today’s meeting reflects the seriousness attached to the situation by Member States and the international community. The General Assembly sent today a strong message to Pakistan and its people: the world stands by them in these difficult times.

Before the beginning of the plenary meeting, the President of the General Assembly met with Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. Mr. Ban briefed Dr. Treki on his visit to Pakistan and the humanitarian situation in the country.

President Treki also met with H.E. Mr. Makhdoom Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Foreign Minister of Pakistan. They discussed the humanitarian situation resulting from the floods in Pakistan. The Foreign Minister expressed gratitude of the Government of Pakistan to the President of the General Assembly for his leadership and initiative to convene the meeting of the General Assembly to focus on the floods situation and to express the solidarity and support of the international community for Pakistan in the face of this crisis. Dr. Treki appreciated the determination and efforts of the government and people of Pakistan and hoped that the international community will step forward in support of Pakistan.
