Meeting with the President of the Security Council

The President of the General Assembly, H.E. Dr. Ali Abdussalam Treki, met with H.E. Mr. Gérard Araud, Permanent Representative of France who is the President of the Security Council for the current month.

They had an exchange of views on several important issues on the agenda of the two organs.

President Treki appreciated the important role of the Security Council in addressing various peace and security situations in Africa. With regard to the situation in the Middle East, President Treki emphasized the urgent need for serious and concerted efforts, particularly by the Security Council, to relaunch the peace process to move towards an early settlement of the Palestinian issue. The two Presidents agreed that progress on this matter was essential for peace and stability of the region.

They also underscored the importance of promoting a diplomatic solution to the Iranian nuclear issue.

The two Presidents also exchanged ideas on further strengthening the coordination and interaction between the General Assembly and the Security Council. President Treki reiterated to the President of the Security Council the collective desire of the general membership for more qualitative and analytical annual reports of the Security Council and referred in that regard to several proposals and initiatives, which the President of the Security Council undertook to consider seriously. They agreed to continue consultations on this issue.

The President of the General Assembly holds regular meetings with the Presidents of the Principal Organs of the United Nations, as provided for in the relevant resolutions of the General Assembly, to ensure enhanced cooperation and coordination in their work programmes in accordance with their respective responsibilities under the Charter.

 

Meeting with the S-5

President Treki met today with representatives of the S-5 group of countries (Costa Rica, Jordan, Liechtenstein, Singapore and Switzerland). They discussed the reform of the Security Council, the importance of improving the working methods of the Council and, particularly, the need for more substantive and analytical annual reports of the Security Council to the General Assembly.

President Treki expressed strong support for the efforts undertaken by S-5.

 

Meeting with the Director of the United Nations Millennium Campaign

President Treki met with Mr. Salil Shetty, Director of the United Nations Millennium Campaign. Mr. Shetty was accompanied by Mr. Faliu Njie, Head of Policy; and Mr. Ehab Burawi, Operations Specialist, Millennium Campaign. They discussed the upcoming High Level Plenary Meeting on the Millennium Development Goals that will be held during the sixty-fifth session of the General Assembly.

 

Meeting with the Permanent Representative of Tunisia

President Treki met with H.E. Mr. Ghazi Jomaa, Permanent Representative of Tunisia, to discuss the International Year of the Youth and the High Level Meeting that will take place in the summer of 2011. They also discussed the preparatory process according to the General Assembly resolution that was adopted in December last year.

The International Year of the Youth is an initiative of His Excellency the President of the Republic of Tunisia. President Treki stressed the importance of this initiative and the need to have an open and inclusive preparatory process in order to ensure the success of the High Level Meeting.
