The President of the General Assembly concludes his official visit to the Republic of Congo
On his official visit to the Republic of Congo, the President of the General Assembly, H.E. Dr. Ali Abdussalam Treki, was received by H.E. Denis Sassou Nguesso, President of the Republic. President Sassou Nguesso had invited Dr. Treki as a Special Guest on the occasion of the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the country’s independence. Both Presidents discussed the challenges and opportunities related to peace and security and development in Africa. They emphasized that Africa's true potential, unity and efforts for integration needed to be utilized fully in order for the continent to enjoy its rightful place in the world. President Treki congratulated President Sassou Nguesso on the success of Jubilee independence celebrations.
President Sassou Nguesso accepted President Treki’s invitation to attend the High Level Plenary Meeting of the General Assembly on the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals to be held in New York in September 2010. The Congolese Head of State expressed support for Dr. Treki's initiatives on the revitalization of the General Assembly and Security Council reform. In this regard, President Sassou NGuesso and President Treki stressed the need for full representation of Africa and its rights.
The President of the General Assembly attended the military and civil parade held in Brazzaville on 15 August. On this occasion, he met with several Heads of State and Government and other eminent personalities present in Brazzaville.
On his arrival in Brazzaville August 13, 2010, the President of the General Assembly was welcomed at the airport by the Congolese Minister of Interior, officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Congo to the United Nations. All heads of agencies constituting the United Nations Country Team (UNCT) in the Republic of Congo were also present to welcome President Treki. Mr. Lamin Manneh, the United Nations Resident Coordinator, briefed the President on the activities of the United Nations in Congo.
Before leaving the Congo in the night of August 15-16, President Treki attended the State banquet.
