Meeting President Treki in Cairo, the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States calls for follow up on the Goldstone report by the General Assembly.
The President of the General Assembly, H.E. Dr. Ali Abdussalam Treki, met this morning with the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, H.E. Mr. Amr Moussa, at the League's Headquarters in Cairo.
Mr. Moussa informed President Treki of the League of Arab States’ request to convening of the General Assembly at the earliest possible date following the submission of the United Nations Secretary-General’s report A/64/651, in order to take action on a draft resolution to follow up resolution 64/10 pertaining to the Goldstone report.
President Treki and Secretary-General Moussa discussed developments in Sudan, including the situation in Darfur and the political process of reconciliation, as well as the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement.
The situation in Somalia was also discussed. Both parties reiterated the need to put forth more efforts to achieve peace in this country. They also reaffirmed the need for more coordination and cooperation between the United Nations, the African Union and the League of Arab States in this and other issues.
The President of the General Assembly will address the Council of the League of Arab States at the Permanent Representative level on Sunday, 21 February.
