Issues

The General Assembly will consider, in the Plenary and the six Main Committees, a wide ranging agenda covering international peace and security, development, human rights, humanitarian assistance, justice and international law, disarmament, drug control, crime prevention, counter-terrorism and other organizational and administrative issues.

During the sixty-fourth session, particular attention will be devoted to the following key issues:

  1. Development, with a special focus on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), including the preparation for the 2010 high-level plenary meeting of the General Assembly to take place at the beginning of the 65th session
  2. The world financial and economic crisis and its impact on development – Follow-up of the June 2009 Conference
  3. Climate Change
  4. Revitalization of the General Assembly including through its enhanced role in consideration of issues related to international peace and security, particularly the question of Palestine, and other important issues related to development, human rights, humanitarian and international law
  5. Dialogue among civilization
  6. Security Council reform, on which intergovernmental negotiations will continue during the 64th session
  7. System-wide coherence and UN management & Secretariat reform
  8. Non proliferation and disarmament, including the holding of the NPT Review Conference
  9. Review processes of the Peacebuilding Commission and the Human Rights Council
  10. Human Trafficking
  11. High Level Review Meeting on the implementation of the Mauritius Strategy for the Further Implementation of the Programme of Action for the Sustainable Development of Small Island Developing States
