On meeting the President of Slovenia

United Nations General Assembly President Srgjan Kerim met today with H.E. Danilo Türk, the President of Slovenia who currently holds the Presidency of the European Union. President Kerim expressed his appreciation to President Türk for taking part in the General Assembly’s high-level thematic debate on climate change convened for 11 and 12 February. He commended Slovenia for its active role in addressing the challenge of climate change, both as a member of the United Nations and in its role as the EU president.

The General Assembly President emphasized the need to undertake concrete measures to tackle climate change while carrying on negotiations and consolidating the new targets set in Bali. He stressed that cities, states and regions should take up initiatives of their own to achieve through partnerships and cooperative efforts sustainable results.

President Kerim and President Türk agreed that climate change should importantly be addressed at regional and sub-regional levels. They called for enhanced activities, including in terms of awareness-raising, in the region of South Eastern Europe.

President Türk welcomed the General Assembly’s thematic debate as an important step in the overall action against climate change and expressed the full support of the European Union to the process.
