STATEMENT ATTRIBUTABLE TO THE SPOKESPERSON
OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY
On meeting with Special Envoy Ibrahim Gambari on the situation in Myanmar
The President of the General Assembly appreciates the briefing he had received from the Secretary-General’s Special Advisor, Ibrahim Gambari on the situation in Myanmar based on his most recent visit to the country and the region.
The President is encouraged by the fact that the Special Advisor was able to visit the country and meet with key representatives of the relevant parties. He is further encouraged by the fact that Special Rapporteur Paulo Sérgio Pinheiro was also able to travel to the country for the first time in four years.
The President welcomes the inauguration of a process that may lead to substantive and unconditional dialogue among the main parties. He stressed the importance that this process must achieve concrete results and a clear commitment on the part of the government of Myanmar is required to work constructively with the Special Advisor.
The President appreciates and strongly supports the role of the ASEAN countries as well as that of neighboring states to facilitate the work of the Special Advisor.
The President expresses his continued support for the good offices efforts of the Secretary-General and stresses the strong and unified commitment of the General Assembly in promoting national reconciliation, democracy and human rights in Myanmar as expressed in resolution 61/232.
