STATEMENT ATTRIBUTABLE TO THE SPOKESPERSON
OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY
On meeting with Myanmar Special Envoy Ibrahim Gambari
United Nations General Assembly President Srgjan Kerim met yesterday the Secretary-General’s Special Advisor Ibrahim Gambari to receive an update on the activities of the good offices of the Secretary-General to promote national reconciliation, democracy and human rights in Myanmar as mandated by relevant General Assembly resolutions.
They stressed the importance of the humanitarian cooperation between the Myanmar authorities, the United Nations and ASEAN in response to the devastation caused by cyclone Nargis. They further discussed the necessity of the continued central role of the Secretary-General's good offices in engaging with Myanmar on a broad-range of issues of interest to Myanmar and the international community.
The President reiterated his continuous support for the Secretary-General’s good offices and for Mr. Gambari’s efforts on behalf of the Secretary-General. He strongly encourages the Government of Myanmar to continue to work closely with the Special Advisor and facilitate an early visit with a view to achieving further tangible progress in the implementation of relevant General Assembly resolutions. The President is also encouraged by the continued role played by neighboring countries, ASEAN members and the Group of Friends of the Secretary-General on Myanmar in facilitating the work of the good offices and the broader engagement of the United Nations in Myanmar.
