STATEMENT ATTRIBUTABLE TO THE SPOKESPERSON
OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY
President of the General Assembly, Srgjan Kerim met today with H.E. Stephen Smith, the Foreign Minister of Australia. They briefly reviewed the main priority issues of the 62nd Session of the General Assembly, including climate change, financing for development, and the Millennium Development Goals. The President stressed the need for a new culture of international relations that is based on the principles of the respect for human rights, human security, responsibility to protect and sustainable development. The Foreign Minister expressed Australia’s full support for the main objectives of the session and the forthcoming important events convened by the President, including the upcoming thematic debate on climate change on 11-12 February. The President of the General Assembly thanked the Foreign Minister for his country’s support of the work of the General Assembly and Australia’s active role in the United Nations.
