STATEMENT ATTRIBUTABLE TO THE SPOKESPERSON
OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY

On meeting with Special Envoy Ibrahim Gambari on the situation in Myanmar

In receiving today a detailed brief from Ibrahim Gambari on his latest visit to Myanmar, General Assembly President Srgjan Kerim stressed his firm and determined support for Mr. Gambari and expressed his full confidence in the role and work of the Special Advisor as part of the good offices efforts of the Secretary-General as mandated by the General Assembly to promote national reconciliation, democracy and human rights in Myanmar.

The President is encouraged by the fact that the Special Advisor was able to meet with key representatives of the relevant parties, including twice with Aung San Suu Kyi as well as with the Referendum Convening Commission and the Constitution Drafting Committee and that he is expected to continue his efforts and return to the region.

The President believes that it is important to have serious engagement and strong commitment from all parties to continue the process of national reconciliation that needs to be credible and inclusive and must lead to concrete results as envisaged by the relevant General Assembly resolutions.

The President hopes that the Government of Myanmar will show readiness to accept the United Nations constructive engagement in the referendum and election process especially as regards the possibility of a monitoring role for the Organization.

The President appreciates the continued role played by neighboring countries, ASEAN states and the Group of Friends of Myanmar and further encourages those countries to remain engaged in the political process.
