On meeting the President of the European Parliament

United Nations General Assembly President Srgjan Kerim held discussions with H.E. Hans Poettering, the President of the European Parliament. Meeting on the occasion of the General Assembly’s high-level thematic debate on climate change, the two sides discussed the need to strengthen the cooperation between regional organizations and the United Nations in addressing the climate change challenge.

Both highlighted the role parliaments, as the main legislative bodies, should play in advancing solutions to major global problems. They especially stressed the need to bring parliaments as institutions, and parliamentarians as individuals into the process of building partnerships to address climate change.

President Kerim stressed the importance of European institutions as being among the closest and most active partners of the United Nations. He noted that they shared the same priorities which included, apart from climate change, the Millennium Development Goals, financing for development and countering terrorism.
