Hon. Geraldine Namirembe Bitamazire (MP)

Hon. Geraldine Namirembe Bitamazire is the Minister of Education and Sports of Uganda 2005 to date.

In April 1996, the Honourable Geraldine Namirembe Bitamazire was elected Member of Parliament and in 1999 she was appointed the Uganda Minister of State for Primary Education.  Her extensive career in education has spanned over four decades from teacher to Senior Education Officer to an earlier position as Minister of Education in 1979-1980.  Born in 1941, Minister Bitamazire has a Diploma, Bachelor and Master’s Degree in Education Management from Makerere University and has been promoting Women’s Rights and Girls’ Education for many years.  She was the National Chairperson of the Uganda Girl Guides Association, 1980s.    Hon. Bitamazire was a member of the UN Commission on the status of Women from 1998 to 2001 and is a founding member of Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE).
