UN Member: President Kavan meets Timor-Leste President
26 September - GA President Kavan's meeting
with President Kay Rala Xanana Gusmao took place on
the admission of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste
as 191st member of the UN. Their discussion focused
on UN assistance for infrastructure development and
security of the newly independent state. Timor-Leste,
according to its president, needs help in creating
the administrative, military, police and other structures
necessary for it to function. President Gusmao said
he appreciated the UN's role in development assistance
although that assistance might end in 2004. Relations
with Indonesia, which include 80% of Timor-Leste's
foreign trade, were also discussed .
