This morning, Dr. Han made an address before the Ad Hoc Committee the Negotiation of the Convention against Corruption. Dr. Han said that the work of Ad Hoc Committee for the Negotiation of the Convention against Corruption represented an important element of a broad agenda for promoting a better world. The fight against transnational organized crime was fight against corruption, eventually facilitating good governance and sustainable development. And the existence and mandate of this Committee strongly demonstrated that corruption was a serious form of transnational crime which could and must be deterred, and that it was a phenomenon which could and should be prevented. Dr. Han concluded that fighting corruption was a long-term process in every country. Long-term institutional commitments by Governments and civil society, as well as the mass-media and the academic community, together with the sustained commitment of adequate resources were critical to the success of our efforts.

Dr. Han visited the Vienna International Center. Dr. Han met with the Director of UNOV, Mr. Costa then attended a luncheon hosted by Mr. Costa.

In the afternoon, Dr. Han met with the Director of the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis.

In the evening, Dr. Han attended a reception in honour of staff members of international agencies in Vienna. Dr. Han made remarks at a reception for United Nations officials. In his remarks at a reception for United Nations officials, first Dr. Han commended and thanked the Director-General of the United Nations Office, Mr. Antonio Maria Costa, and other staff members for their devotion to the work of the United Nations. Then Dr. Han said among other things, "The United Nations has been playing a critical role in combating the scourge of international terrorism. When the Session of the General Assembly began the next day of the terrorist attacks on the US, the first order of business, after my election as president, was to pass a strongly-worded resolution condemning global terrorism. The Organization and its agencies had developed a wide range of international legal agreements aimed at suppressing terrorism and bringing its perpetrators to justice.  A comprehensive convention on terrorism will be discussed more in the next Session of the General Assembly. The recent UN symposium on combating international terrorism held here in Vienna further demonstrates the depth of our commitment.  This new trend has been contributing to the strengthening of the General Assembly within the framework of the United Nations." Dr. Han also mentioned the independence of East Timor, and the success of UNAMSIK in maintaining peace and stability in Sierra Leone. Dr. Han concluded his remarks by focusing on the degree of commitment and support of Member States and of each and every one of people present tonight.
