President attended the International Women’s Day Ceremony; met Student Representatives for Model UN; met with the President of ECOSOC, H. E. Mr. Ivan Simonovic

Today is International Women’s Day. This morning, addressing an event to mark International Women’s Day, Dr. Han paid tribute to Mrs. Laura Bush for her efforts to promote women’s rights and Mrs. Bush participated in the event. Focusing on the theme for the day: the women of Afghanistan, he said “I strongly believe that, in post-Taliban Afghanistan, women should become primary stakeholders, who will identify their own needs and priorities in all sectors of society. The international community should continue to encourage the new leadership of the Interim Authority to empower the Afghan women as full partners in the post-conflict reconstruction of the country. The donor countries for Afghanistan should place high priority on promoting and protecting the human rights of women and girls in Afghanistan. In particular, girls should be guaranteed equal access to education.”

Dr. Han then met with representatives of a Model UN for students. The Panamanian ambassador paid a courtesy call on Dr. Han regarding this.

In the afternoon, Dr. Han met with the President of ECOSOC (Economic and Social Council), H. E. Mr. Ivan Simonovic from Republic of Croatia. They confirmed the cooperation and coordination between two organs and exchanged various issues including discussions of ECOSOC reports at the plenary meeting, heightened coherence between agendas of the two organs, the role of GA(General Assembly) and ECOSOC in the monitoring and follow up to the International Conference on Financing for Development which is to be held in Monterrey, Mexico from 18 March 2002 to 22 March 2002. They also made sure to further cooperation between GA and ECOSOC after the conference.
