President attended the event in Observance of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People; met with British Parliamentarians

This morning, Dr. Han presided over the General Assembly plenary meeting, there were 51 draft resolutions or decisions stemming from the work of the First Committee, and about 30 rounds of voting.

In the afternoon, the Assembly dealt with the Questions of Palestine. There are four draft resolutions on this item:

A/56/L.19 on the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People,
A/56/L.20 on the Division for Palestinian Rights of the Secretariat,
A/56/L.21 on DPI’s special information programme on the question of Palestine, and
A/56/L.22 on the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine.

General Assembly President Han Seung-soo opened the plenary meeting this morning and later participated in the ceremony commemorating the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. In his statement he said among other things that, “As President of the General Assembly, I would like to reiterate the Assembly’s position that the UN has a special responsibility regarding the question of Palestine, until it is effectively resolved in all its aspects, in accordance with international law and the relevant resolutions of the Security Council and the General Assembly. It is incumbent on all of us to see to it that this objective is accomplished.” Dr. Han expressed his wish that the Palestinian people would soon be able to exercise its inalienable rights, as called for numerous times by the General Assembly, namely the right to self-determination without external interference; the right to national independence and sovereignty; and the right to return to their homes and properties or, to receive compensation for those choosing not to return.  Dr. Han said that he would do his utmost to contribute to the peace and prosperity of the Mid East region and of the Palestinian people.

In the afternoon, Dr. Han met with a group of British Parliamentarians, namely Mr. Gerry Sutcliffe MP, Mr. Tom Harris MP, Mr. Ian Lucas MP, Ms. Meg Munn MP, Mr. Paul Burstow MP, Mr. Stephen O’Brien MP and Mr. Alistair Burt. They exchanged the views and perspectives regarding the role and functions of the United Nations and the relationship between major organs of the UN and the current situation in Afghanistan.
