The General Assembly met in plenary this morning to discuss the outcome of the Millennium Summit. The Secretary-General’s report on the issue, the so-called ‘Road Map report’, was issued in early September as document A/56/326. As part of the follow-up to the Millennium Summit, the Secretary-General formed the Youth Employment Network and appointed a high-level panel to prepare policy recommendations regarding youth employment. The recommendations are out as document A/56/422.

In the 6th Committee, the Chairman this morning outlined the agenda and the first item would be on human cloning, the next on the safety of UN personnel, followed by reports of the International Law Commission and the International Trade Law Commission. The Committee would then deal with the item on the International Criminal Court, observer status for Partners in Population and Development and cooperation with the Inter-Parliamentary Union before taking up item 166 “Measures to eliminate international terrorism.” The Committee is expected to take action on a number of draft resolutions.

In the afternoon, the 59th meeting continued today with Dr. Han presiding. The General Assembly concluded its discussion after hearing 41 speakers.

Dr. Han met with the Director of the UNICEF Tokyo Office, Mr. Sam Koo.

Then Dr. Han delivered a courtesy call by the Director General of ESCAP (Economic and Social Commission of Asia and Pacific), Dr. Kim Hak-soo. Dr. Kim informed Dr. Han that ESCAP has undergone dynamic reform and gave couple of examples. Thereafter they exchanged the views of how to improve the work of the General Assembly and on other activities.

Later in the evening, Dr. Han attended a reception for Members of the ICT Task Force.
