Fifty-Sixth Regular Session of the General Assembly General Debate started today
10 November 2001

This morning, Dr. Han presided over the first day of the seven-day General Debate, ending on 16 November. Due to the terrorist attacks on the US, the General Debate was postponed for 7 weeks. In Dr. Han's opening remark, he said "The actions of the United Nations in the past two months give proof of our united response to the challenge. Beginning with the unanimous resolution by the General Assembly on 12 September and the two important resolutions of the Security Council, we have moved quickly and decisively to address the overriding issue of terrorism. Also, progress has been made by the Sixth Committee toward finalizing a comprehensive convention on terrorism. Taking this opportunity, I would like to appeal to all Member States to further strengthen cooperation for an early conclusion of the convention."
The speakers were: Brazil, the United States, South Africa, Qatar, Uruguay, Argentina, Venezuela, Chile, Iran, India, the Republic of Korea, Belgium and Ukraine.

In the afternoon, right before a luncheon hosted by the Secretary-General, Dr. Han met with H. E. Mr. George W. Bush, the President of the United States of America.

In the afternoon, the speakers in the General Debate were: the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, the Republic of Columbia, the Republic of Peru, the Republic of Slovenia, the Republic of Bolivia, the Republic of Zambia, Romania, Jamaica, the Republic of Ghana, France, Andorra, Canada, Zimbabwe and Honduras.

Later in the afternoon, Dr. Han met with H. E. Mr. Milan Kucan, the President of Slovenia, with the Prime Minister of Mauritius and with the Prime Minister of Bosnia.
