President received a briefing by the Under-Secretary-General of the Legal Counsel, Mr. Han Corell; met with the Palestinian Journalists; met with the Executive Secretary of the CTBTO

In the morning, Dr. Han met with Hans Corell who came to the office of the president to explain the situation about the informal negotiations for the Comprehensive Convention on Terrorism. Mr. Corell reported to the president that the informal negotiation does not produce agreed text for the convention and henceforth the sixth committee would take up the issue.

Dr. Han met with the young palestian journalists who are visiting United Nations under the programme provided by DPI. They asked questions related to current issue of terrorism and Middle East situations.

Plenary meeting continued today while Dr. Han presiding in the morning and in the afternoon. The meetings were regarding United Nations Year of Dialogue among Civilizations. Dr. Han made a statement in the morning about United Nations Year of Dialogue among Civilization. In his statement, Dr. Han said among other things that, “We find ourselves at a critical juncture of history. Along with the advent of the age of globalization, terrorism has now surfaced as the major threat to international peace and security. Terrorism represents the very embodiment of intolerance and hatred. All great civilizations and religious in history preach tolerance and compassion. Thus, dialogue among civilizations, by promoting tolerance, undermines the basis of terrorism, and thus contributes to global peace and security.”

Also Secretary-General made a statement. Statements were made by President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Federal Chancellor of Austria, Prime Minister of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs of Belgium (on behalf of the European Union and Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Turkey), Minister for Foreign Affairs of Madagascar, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Sudan, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Costa Rica, the representative of the United States, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Finland, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Uruguay and former President of the General Assembly, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Guatemala, the representative of Tunisia, Minster for Foreign Affairs of Mozambique, the representatives of Bangladesh, Colombia, Canada, Liechtenstein, the United Arab Emirates, Nepal, the Czech Republic, Iraq, Venezuela, Malaysia and the Philippines, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka,  and the representative of Cuba.

Later in the afternoon, Dr. Han met with the Executive Secretary of the CTBTO, Mr. Wolfgang Hoffmann. They exchanged their views and opinions.
