Meeting of the High Level Dialogue on Strengthening International Economic Cooperation for Development through Partnership concludes its deliberations today with President presiding

Dr. Han, in his closing remarks on the High level Dialogue, said that the plenary debate provided a unique opportunity to discuss the international economic environment from different perspectives and emphasized that the dialogue was particularly timely in the context of the current global economic slowdown. With regard to financing for development, Dr. Han noted that the upcoming Financing for Development Conference in Monterrey, Mexico, represented an invaluable opportunity to promote significant improvements in the growth and development prospects of developing countries. Regarding the role of information and communication technologies for development, Dr. Han said that comprehensive national action could be a prerequisite for establishing the necessary capacities and infrastructure to reap the benefits of ICT.

Dr. Han met with H.E. Mr. Bagher Asadi of the Islamic Republic of Iran, who is Chairman of G-77. H. E. Mr. Asadi referred to the long working relationship between G-77 and the President of General Assembly, and promised full cooperation on the part of G-77 with GA President on issues to be discussed during this session.

Then, he also met with the Leadership of the Arab League and discussed on the several relevant agenda items for the 56th General Assembly.

Permanent Representative and Deputy Permanent Representative of the United Kingdom, H. E. Sir Jeremy Greenstock, H. E. Mr. Stewart Eldon paid a courtesy call on the Dr. Han. They discussed various issues such as the debate on terrorism scheduled for October 1, 2001. In their meeting, Dr. Han clearly expressed his neutral and fair position as a President of General Assembly regarding Security Council reform.

In the evening, Dr. Han visited “Family Assistance Center of New York” and expressed his sympathy for the families of victims of the recent terrorist attack on the US.
