The President attends Peace Bell Ringing Ceremony and presides over General Committee

In the morning, Dr. Han attended the Peace Bell Ringing Ceremony held in the Garden of Peace. The Secretary-General, the President of the Security Council who is the Permanent Representative of France, and the General Assembly President, Dr. Han made a statement as well. In his statement, Dr. Han stressed the need for international cooperation in the struggle against terrorism and expressed his unequivocal support for the efforts of the people of the United States to rebuild the damaged city.

Dr. Han presided over the General Committee which allocated the agenda of the 56th Session of the General Assembly to main committees and plenary meetings.

Dr. Han, advised by Mayor Giuliani, that due to the continued uncertain security situation in the city, it would be difficult for the host city to provide necessary arrangements for security and other facilities to participants in the General Debate scheduled from Monday, 24 September to Friday, 5 October 2001, held consultations with Chairmen of the five regional groups and of the main committees on possible rescheduling of the General Debate. It was agreed in the meeting, that all the regional groups would meet on Monday, 17 September 2001 in order to consult with Member States on this matter and the result would be announced at the plenary meeting on Wednesday, 19 September 2001.
