The following statement was issued 23 January 2001
by the President of the General Assembly,
H.E. MR. HARRI HOLKERI:

Today, the United Nations flag is at half-mast in honour of President Laurent-Desire Kabila of the Democratic Republic of the Congo who was killed last week. I appeal to all parties not to let his sudden death deter efforts to find a peaceful solution to the conflict in that country and region.
