The General Assembly adopted a resolution, introduced jointly
by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and the Republic
of Korea, on peace, security and reunification on the Korean
peninsula.
The President made introductory remarks when the General Assembly
began its discussion today on the implementation of the outcome
of the 1995 World Summit for Social Development and the related
special session of the General Assembly held this summer in
Geneva. The full text of his remarks is available on the "Statements
and Messages" page. Earlier, the General Assembly discussed
a new agenda item on global partnerships.
The President held meetings with the Chair of the Group of
77 and China, the Permanent Representative of Nigeria, Ambassador
Arthur Mbanefo, the Permanent Representative of South Africa,
Ambassador Dumisani Shadrack Kumalo, and the Permanent Representative
of Indonesia, Ambassador Makarim Wibisono. These discussions
dealt with the venue for the 10-year review of the Rio conference
on Environment and Sustainable Development. Both South Africa
and Indonesia have offered to host the conference. The President
emphasized that the matter should be solved by the two countries
themselves, but also pointed out the urgency to find a solution.
The President said he and his office would be available should
any assistance be required in this matter.
The President attended a reception hosted by the Permanent
Representative of Algeria, H.E. Mr. Abdallah Baali, on the
occasion of the National Day of Algeria.
The President also attended a reception hosted by the Legal
Advisor of the Permanent Mission of Italy, Mr. Mauro Politi,
in honour of the delegates to the Sixth Committee of the General
Assembly.
