The General Assembly today adopted a resolution which calls
for protection of world's religious sites. The Assembly, with
Mr. Holkeri presiding over its meeting, also adopted a resolution
on the Protocol against the Illicit Manufacturing of and Trafficking
in Firearms, Their Parts and Components and Ammunition, supplementing
the United Nations Convention Against Transnational Organized
Crime.
The Assembly also acted on a resolution regarding the agenda
of the special session HIV/AIDS, as well as approved the dates
for the second high-level dialogue on strengthening international
economic cooperation for development through partnership.
The General Assembly also, on the recommendation of the Secretary-General,
decided to extend the appointment of Mrs. Mary Robinson as
United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights for a period
of one year, until 11 September 2002.
The President today also presided over a meeting of the Open-ended
Ad Hoc Working Group on the Causes of Conflict and the Promotion
of Durable Peace and Sustainable Development in Africa. This
was the third meeting of this week's session of the Working
Group. The focus of today's discussion was on conflict prevention
and post-conflict peace-building. The discussion will continue
tomorrow.
Upcoming special sessions of the General Assembly were in
focus during the meeting between Mr. Holkeri and Ambassador
Ruth Jacoby of Sweden. Sweden is currently holding the presidency
of the European Union.
In another meeting today, Mr. Holkeri met with H.E. Mr. Luigi
Augusto Lauriola, Chairman of the Ad Hoc Committee on the
Elaboration of a Convention against Transnational Organized
Crime. Ambassador Lauriola is also Head of Secretariat of
the Wassenaar Arrangement on Export Controls for Conventional
Arms and Dual-Use Goods and Technologies.
Later on the day the President attended a reception on the
occasion of the anniversary of His Royal Highness the Prince
of Monaco, hosted by H.E. Mr. Jacques L. Boisson, Permanent
Representative of the Principality of Monaco.
