The General Assembly concluded its consideration of the agenda
item on Oceans and the Law of the Sea with the adoption of
two resolutions; one on efforts to prevent and combat piracy
and armed robbery at sea, the other on large-scale pelagic
drift-net fishing and unauthorized fishing in international
waters. The Assembly also discussed cooperation between the
United Nations and three other bodies: the Preparatory Commission
for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization,
the Organization of the Islamic Conference and the League
of Arab States.
The open-ended informal consultations of the Plenary on the
follow-up on the outcome of the Millennium Summit continued
with Mr. Holkeri presiding. During the discussions many delegations
stressed the importance a comprehensive and balanced approach
in the follow-up. The question of resources was also raised.
The President was a keynote speaker at the event "Eliminating
Hunger in the New Millennium". In his remarks the President
spoke among other issues about the link between hunger, poverty
and lack of development opportunities. The full text of his

Mr. Holkeri attended a reception hosted by the Permanent Representative
of Turkey, H.E. Mr. Umit Pamir, on the occasion of the Anniversary
of the proclamation of the Turkish Republic.
The President attended a reception, which was followed by
a luncheon, sponsored by the Stanley Foundation. Later in
the day the President attended to a dinner, hosted by H.E.
Ambassador Markku Reimaa who represents Finland in the Conference
on Disarmament in Geneva.
