29 September 2000

The President met with the Former President of South Africa, Mr. Nelson Mandela. They discussed the situation in Africa and the importance of effective follow up to the Millennium Declaration in this respect. They also discussed the revitalization of the work of the Africa Working Group, which the President of the General Assembly chairs. A photograph of their meeting can be viewed on the "Photos" page.

The President hosted a lunch for the President of Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), Ambassador Makarim Wibisono. The Director of the Division for ECOSOC Support and Coordination also attended. The discussion dealt with, among other issues, the possibilities of improving cooperation and understanding between the United Nations and the Bretton Woods Institutions. The President of the GA and the President of ECOSOC agreed to join forces in pursuing this goal. Also, the outcome of the high-level segment of the substantive session of ECOSOC on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) was discussed, and Mr. Khan provided a brief overview on the current status of the ICT task-force.

The President also met the Special Representative of the World Bank to the United Nations, Ms. Monique Garrety. The discussion dwelled on the recent Annual Meeting of the Bretton Woods Institutions in Prague. Also the role of Non-Governmental Organizations in the United Nations and the Bretton Woods Institutions was touched. The President informed the World Bank Special Representative of his plans to visit Washington during the autumn session of the General Assembly.
