The General Assembly concluded its consideration of support by the United Nations system of the efforts of governments to promote and consolidate new or restored democracies and adopted a resolution on it without a vote. The General Assembly also discussed strengthening the coordination of humanitarian and disaster relief assistance of the United Nations, including special economic assistance. Two related resolutions were adopted, concerning assistance to Tajikistan and Kazakhstan.

The President met with the Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, Mr. Nitin Desai. He briefed the Under Secretary-General on his visits to Vienna and Washington. A photograph of their meeting can be viewed on the "Photos" page.

The President attended a working luncheon hosted by the Permanent representative of the Netherlands, H.E. Mr. Peter van Walsum, in honor of H.R.H. the Prince of Orange. The theme for the luncheon discussion was: "the future of the United Nations after the Millennium".
