The President today made remarks at the African Summit on
HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Other Infectious Diseases. The
Summit is being held in Abuja, Nigeria, and is attended by
some 50 African leaders. In his remarks the President stressed
the importance of knowledge in preventing the spread of infectious
diseases and called for utilizing information and communication
technologies in sharing knowledge. The President also noted
that the outcome of this African Summit would be an essential
and invaluable input to the final outcome document of the
upcoming HIV/AIDS special session, which will take place in
New York from 25 to 27 June 2001. The full text of his statement

The President also gave a message on the occasion of the 15th
Anniversary of Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster. In his message
the President expressed his hope for the international community
to succeed in its efforts in preventing similar accidents
from happening again anywhere in the world. The full text
