The General Assembly today discussed cooperation between the
United Nations and the Economic Cooperation Organization and
adopted a resolution on this matter. The General Assembly
also considered the support by the United Nations system to
the efforts of governments to promote and consolidate new
or restored democracies.
The President met with the Chairpersons of the Regional Groups
for the month of November in order to inform them - and through
them the Membership - about a number of current issues. A
summary of the issues taken up by the President during the
meeting is availabe in the "Statements and Messages"
page.
Separately, the President met with the Chairpersons of the
Regional Groups of Asia and Africa on the issue of who will
host the Rio + 10 conference in 2002. The President made a
proposal for the Chairpersons to discuss within their respective
groups. The President also met on the same issue the Permanent
Representatives of Indonesia and South Africa.
The President presided over the third round of the Open-ended
Informal Consultations of the Plenary on the Follow-up to
the outcome of the Millennium Summit based on the elements
paper prepared by the President.
Later in the day the President was the quest of honor in a
dinner, hosted by the Permanent Observer of the Holy See,
Archbishop Renato Raffaele Martino.
