Today, the President made a statement to the General Assembly on the occasion of Africa Industrialization Day. He spoke about the opportunities and challenges of globalization and stressed the need for sustainable development in Africa. The General Assembly today discussed the reports of the International Criminal Tribunals for Rwanda and the Former Yugoslavia. The General Assembly also, on the recommendation of its First Committee (Disarmament and International Security), adopted 48 resolutions and one decision on a broad range of disarmament measures. Furthermore, the General Assembly decided that the dates of the special session of the General Assembly for the follow-up to the World summit for Children would be from 19 to 21 September 2001.

The President met with the Permanent Representative of Iceland, H.E. Mr. Thorsteinn Ingolfsson. The discussion centered on the issue of Security Council reform.

Mr. Holkeri also met with the President of the Council of Former Presidents of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Samir Shibabi. Their discussion touched upon the role of the Council and its next meeting in New York in 2001. A photograph of their meeting can be viewed on the "Photos" page.

The President attended a reception hosted by the Permanent Representative of the Sultanate of Oman, H.E. Mr. Fuad Mubarak Al-Hinai, on the occasion of the Thirteenth Anniversary of the National Day of the Sultanate of Oman.

Later in the day Mr. Holkeri attended a dinner hosted by the Permanent Representative of Finland, H.E. Ms. Marjatta Rasi, for Ambassadors "To Meet the President".
