The President of the General Assembly, Mr. Harri Holkeri,
today delivered the sermon at a service dedicated to the work
of the United Nations, held at New York City's Cathedral of
Saint John the Divine.
This church service is an annual event held to honor the opening
of the General Assembly.
In the sermon, President Holkeri stated that global problems
need a community-level approach. To achieve community peace,
individuals have a responsibility to break free from the circle
of hate, revenge, and violence. It is a community that gives
individuals the strength and courage to advance reconciliation
and forgiveness. In that context, education of children, especially
for girls, as well as partnerships between non-governmental
and community-based organizations and the rest of society
are particularly relevant.
