The President gave the closing words at a seminar on the Åland
Islands, which was held today at the United Nations Headquarters.
The theme for the Seminar was "Autonomy - an Alternative to
Secession?" and various speakers spoke about the Åland Islands
as an example of peaceful governance. In his remarks Mr. Holkeri
noted the importance of being able to share the lessons learned
and experience gained with the international community, including
both governmental and non-governmental actors. He also said
that he hopes the thoughts raised during the seminar would
be forwarded to regions still taking the first steps in their
efforts towards lasting peaceful governance so as to contribute
towards their search for solutions. The full text of his remarks
is available at the "Statements and Messages" page.
Today the President also continued presiding over the work
of the Open-ended working Group on Security Council reform.
During its fifth and sixth meeting, the Working Group concentrated
on discussing the working methods of the Council. Mr. Holkeri's
opening remarks for today's meeting are available on the "Statements
and Messages" page.
