The President met with the chairpersons of the Non Aligned
Movement and Arab Group as well as Ambassador Al-Kidwa, Permanent
Observer of Palestine to the UN, who were requesting for the
resumption of the 10th Emergency Special Session of the General
Assembly on the issue "Illegal Israeli actions in occupied
East Jerusalem and the rest the Occupied Palestinian Territory".
The President met with H.E. Movses Abelian, Permanent Representative
of Armenia, who briefed him on the negotiations concerning
the scale of assessments for peacekeeping operations. Ambassador
Abelian, a former Chairman of the Fifth Committee, is coordinating
the negotiations in the Committee during this session.
Also today the President met with Mr. Jose Bustani, Director-General
of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons
(OPCW), who briefed him about the work of the organization.
They discussed the cooperation agreement between the United
Nations and the OPCW scheduled for signature on October 17.
Discussions focused on the follow-up to the Millenium Summit
and the Brahimi Report during a meeting between the President
and the Ambassador of Cuba, Mr. Bruno Rodriquez Parrilla.
The President met with H.E. Jean de Dieu Ntiruhungwa, Minister
of Public Works, Transport and Communications of the Republic
of Rwanda. A number of issues related to information and communications
technology were discussed. Mr. John Nkongoli, Managing Director
of the Rwandan Airports Authority, as well as H.E. Joseph
Mutaboba, Permanent Representative of Rwanda to the UN also
attended the meeting.
The President met with Mr. Joseph Connor, Under Secretary-General
of the Department of Management, to discuss the Brahimi Report,
as well as a number of administrative issues related to functioning
of the President's Office.
The President met with Mr. Toshiyuki Niwa, Assistant Secretary-General
for Central Support Services, who briefed him on the capital
master plan to upgrade the Headquarters building.
Later in the day the President hosted a dinner in honour of
the former President of Finland, H.E. Mr. Martti Ahtisaari.
The discussions focused on consideration of the Brahimi Report.
