The General Assembly adopted a resolution on the necessity
of ending the economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed
by the United States against Cuba. It was the ninth such resolution
the General Assembly has passed since 1991.
The President attended a fundraising luncheon for the Non-Governmental
Organisations -Committee on the Status of Women honoring the
twelve female ambassadors to the United Nations in New York.
In his remarks the President emphasized the importance of
girls' education as a way of opening opportunities for their
meaningful participation in economic and political life. The

During his meeting with the President, the Chairman of the
Fourth Committee, Permanent Representative of Uganda, H.E.
Mr. Matia Mulumba Semakula Kiwanuka, briefed him on the work
of the committee. A photograph of their meeting can be viewed

Mr. Holkeri met with the President of the 52nd Session of
the General Assembly and Chairman of the Human Rights Committee
of the Parliament of Ukraine, H.E. Mr. Hennadiy Udovenko.
They discussed the scheduling of the annual meeting of past
General Assembly Presidents to be convened by Mr. Holkeri
next year.
Mr. Holkeri attended a reception hosted by the Permanent Representative
of Japan, H.E. Mr. Yukio Satoh, in honor of the United Nations
High Commissioner for Refugees, Mrs. Sadako Ogata.
The President attended a reception hosted by the Permanent
Representative of the Republic of Poland, H.E. Mr. Janus Stanczyk,
on the occasion of the 82nd Anniversary of the Independence
of the Republic of Poland.
Later in the day Mr. Holkeri attended a dinner hosted by the
Permanent Representative of Finland, H.E. Ms. Marjatta Rasi,
for Ambassadors "To Meet the President".
