The President today spoke at the Summer Seminar "Cultural
Borders and Multicultural Societies", organised by the
United Nations Association of Estonia. In his speech Mr. Holkeri
focused on the role of international organisations in coping
with cultural conflicts. He stressed the importance of education
to foster values of tolerance and non-violence in a multicultural
society. He also noted that while the role of the United Nations
is to promote tolerance among peoples, it is the Governments'
responsibility to try to educate people to understand our
differences. The full text of his speech is available on "Statements
and Messages" page.
The President also had a luncheon meeting with H.E. Mr. Mart
Laar, Prime Minister of Estonia.
