The President was the keynote speaker at the 21st General Assembly of the Conference of Non-Governmental Organizations in Consultative Status with the United Nations (CONGO). In his speech Mr. Holkeri stressed the need for the UN's partnership with civil society to be strengthened. The full text of his speech is available on "Statements and Messages" page.

The President held a press conference for the international news media at the Vienna International Center. Mr. Holkeri highlighted current issues in the work of the United Nations General Assembly. He was asked questions about the follow-up to the Millennium Summit, Security Council reform and other issues of interest to the journalists. The President had meetings with Dr. Heinz Fischer, President of the National Council (parliament) of the Republic of Austria and with Mr. Carlos Magarinos, Director-General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).

Later the President was the guest of honor at a luncheon hosted by the President of CONGO, Ms. Afaf Mahfouz.
