The President hosted a lunch to discuss information and communication
technology (ICT) and how the United Nations might facilitate
development and access, especially for developing countries.
The lunch was attended by the Permanent Representatives of
Algeria, Bangladesh, Cameroon, Indonesia, Jamaica, Lesotho
and Rwanda. The participants emphasized the need for further
discussions of ICT and its role in development within the
context of the United Nations, and there were suggestions
made about how this might be done.
The President met with the Honourable Mr. Amil Gayan, the
Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Cooperation of Mauritius,
who briefed Mr. Holkeri on the candidature of Mauritius to
the Security Council.
The President met with the Permanent Representative of Luxembourg,
Ambassador Hubert Wurth. The Ambassador accepted President's
invitation to serve as the facilitator of consultations on
humanitarian resolutions related to the General Assembly agenda
item 20, strengthening the coordination of humanitarian and
disaster relief assistance.
During his meeting with the President, the Chairman of the
Second Committee, Mr. Alexandru Nicolescu briefed Mr. Holkeri
about the work of the Committee.
