The President met with Sergio Vieira de Mello, the Secretary-General's
Special Representative to East Timor. They discussed the situation
in East Timor and the work of the United Nations Transitional
Authority in East Timor (UNTAET). The photograph of their

The President also met with H.E. Sir Jeremy Greenstock, Permanent
Representative of the United Kingdom. They discussed the importance
of follow-up to the Millennium Summit, the expeditious consideration
of the Brahimi Report, the reform of the Security Council
and the consideration of the Scale of Assessments.
The President met with the Permanent Representative of Liechtenstein,
H.E. Mrs. Claudia Fritsche. The Ambassador, who is one of
the longest serving Permanent Representatives to the United
Nations in New York, noted that this was her 11th General
Assembly. A wide range of issues was discussed during their
meeting.
Mr. Holkeri met with 19 journalists from developing countries
who are part of the Department of Public Information sponsored
annual Training Programme for Broadcasters and Journalists
from Developing Countries. Mr. Holkeri spoke to the journalists
about the importance of the Summit and the need for the General
Assembly to follow-up on the commitments in the Summit Declaration.
The President also mentioned the link between peace and socio-economic
development and the need for the United Nations to work towards
a culture of prevention rather than a culture of reaction.
There was a lively discussion during the meeting and Mr. Holkeri
answered a number of questions from the journalists.
Mr. Holkeri also attended a luncheon with the Consul General
of Bolivia, H.E. Mr. C. Paul Bruckner.
