In Helsinki today, the President received the first-ever message containing so-called "rich-media information" to his mobile phone. This was the world's first phone call with a 3G (Third Generation) mobile phone. 3G is a global development of communication technologies and will eventually lead to multimedia services being accessed with mobile phones. Exactly ten years ago, on 1 July 1991, Mr. Holkeri was the first person in the world to make a GSM phone call when the technology was introduced during his term as the Prime Minister of Finland.
