Background

This Session is Organized by UNCHS (Habitat) with the support of Sweden, holding the Presidency of the European Union.

It is to be held on 6 June 2001, from 14.30 -17.30hrs in Conference Room 6 at the U.N. Secretariat in New York.

INTRODUCTION

The Habitat Agenda committed Governments at all levels, the private sector and all civil society (NGO) actors, to take action in strengthening and enhancing wider accessibility of housing finance systems and to eradicate all forms of discrimination against borrowers, with a view to facilitating the realisation of the universal goal of adequate shelter for all.

HOW BEST CAN THIS COMMITTMENT BE ADDRESSED AND REALIZED?

This Parallel Event at the Istanbul + 5 Session in New York

will present the report and conclusions of the Gavle (Sweden) Inter-Regional Seminar on Housing Finance Operations Experiences and provide an opportunity of a broader-based dialogue, exchange and comparison of ideas, experiences and reflections on more effective strategies to leverage and mobilize greater resources for sustainable housing finance in the implementation of the Habitat Aganda.

A panel of distinguished experts on housing finance will address the session to further explore the issues involved and chart the way forward

on how best to improve, promote, and advance on the mobilization and access of resources for housing, especially for the low-income segment of the population.

Leaders of Housing Finance Institutions, Development Banks, Government Policy Makers, including leaders of Local Authorities, as well as other relevant actors and civil society groups will participate.

ALL ARE CORDIALLY INVITED TO COME, PARTICIPATE AND CONTRIBUTE THEIR EXPERIENCES
