This morning, the General Assembly is holding open-ended informal consultations of the plenary on agenda item 49 (b), the Millennium Assembly of the United Nations. The closed-door meeting is taking place in Conference Room 1.
At two meetings tomorrow, the Assembly will consider the items on global implications of the year 2000 date conversion problem of computers; International recognition of the Day of the Vesak; and the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The Assembly will take action on six draft resolutions ready for adoption under the item on strengthening of the coordination of humanitarian and disaster relief assistance of the United Nations, including special economic assistance (A/54/L.52, L.66-L.70). It will also take action on the following draft resolutions: cooperation between the United Nations and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (A/54/L.64 and amendment A/54/L.65); the situation in Central America (A/54/L.24/Rev.1 and A/54/662); and general and complete disarmament: small arms (A/54/563, A/54/663).
This morning, the Second Committee (Economic and Financial) is taking action on draft resolutions dealing with a stable international financial system, responsive to the challenges of development, especially in the developing countries (A/C.2/54/L.72), and on implementation of the Programme of Action for the Least Developed Countries for the 1990s (A/C.2/54/73).
Concerning the appointments of President Theo-Ben Gurirab, this morning, he met with the Permanent Representative of Djibouti, Ambassador Roble Olhaye, Chairman of the Second Committee. The President then chaired the informal consultations on the Millennium Assembly. This afternoon, the President holds a meeting with Secretary-General Kofi Annan, in the President’s Office. This evening, he will attend a working dinner in his honour, hosted by the Permanent Representative of Germany, Ambassador Dieter Kastrup.
