Letter dated 15 September 1998 from the President of the General Assembly addressed to the Chairman of the Third Committee
 

I have the honour to transmit to you herewith the decisions taken by the fifty-third session of the General Assembly at its 3rd plenary meeting, pertaining to the allocation of items to the Third Committee.

I wish to draw your attention to the recommendations on the organization of the session contained in section II of the report of the General Committee (A/53/250). Those recommendations were approved by the General Assembly, also at its 3rd plenary meeting.

May I also draw your attention to paragraph 45 of section IV and to the relevant part of paragraph 59 of section V of the report concerning the agenda of the Main Committees.

I earnestly request your cooperation in these matters.

1. Report of the Economic and Social Council [chapters I, III, V, VI, VIII (sections A, C and I)
    and X] (item12).
 
    [The General Assembly decided that the chapters of the report listed below would be referred
     also to plenary meetings and to the Second and Fifth Committees, as follows:

    (a) Chapters I, VIII (section C) and X ....... Plenary meetings and Second and Fifth Committees

    [The General Assembly decided that the report of the Administrator of the United Nations
     Development Programme on the operations, management and budget of the United Nations
     Development Fund for Women should be referred to the Second Committee for consideration
     under item 95 (Operational activities for development).]
 
6. Implementation of the outcome of the Fourth World Conference on Women (item 104).
 
7. Report of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees: questions relating to refugees
    and displaced persons and humanitarian questions (item 105).
 
8. Promotion and protection of the rights of children (item 106).
 
9. Programme of activities of the International Decade of the World's Indigenous People (item 107).
 
10. Elimination of racism and racial discrimination (item 108).
 
11. Right of peoples to self-determination (item 109).

    (a) Implementation of human rights instruments;

    [The General Assembly decided that, in the light of decision 52/424 of 12 December 1997, the
      ceremony for the awarding of prizes in the field of human rights in 1998 should be held on
      Thursday, 10 December 1998, on the occasion of the celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of
      the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in plenary meeting.]
