This morning, the President met with the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and of Azerbaijan, with the Deputy Foreign Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malta and with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh. He is also chairing this morning's plenary meeting. This afternoon, he is scheduled to meet with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Costa Rica and Tunisia, as well as with the Minister of State in charge of Foreign Affairs of Cameroon, and with the Permanent Representative of Sweden in his capacity as President of the Security Council for September.

This morning, the Assembly is continuing the general debate with statements by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs of Malta, Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Syrian Arab Republic and Azerbaijan, Secretary of the General People's Committee of the People's Bureau for Foreign Liaison and International Cooperation of the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, Deputy Prime Minister of Fiji, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan and the Minister for External Relations of the Sudan. After the last speaker in the general debate this morning, the Assembly will take up the agenda item 16 B -- the election of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. In his note contained in document A/53/389, the Secretary-General proposes that the term of office of Mrs. Sadako Ogata be extended for a period of two years, from 1 January 1999 to 31 December 2000, in accordance with her preference, for personal reasons, not to serve another full five-year term.

In the afternoon, the general debate will resume with statements by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Water Resources of Nepal, Chairman of the delegation of Samoa, Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs of Saudi Arabia, Ministers for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Mauritania and Benin, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Andorra, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of Afghanistan, Chairman of the delegation of Barbados, and the Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Kenya.
