Yesterday afternoon, the President of the General Assembly had issued a staement attributable to his Spokesman regarding the announcements by Pakistan and India on the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty. It is available on the racks in both English and French.
He began this morning with a series of bilateral meetings, first with the President of Moldova, followed by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Spain, Romania and South Africa, who is coming as a representative of the Chairman of NAM. This afternoon, he will meet with the Prime Minister of Swaziland, Foreign Minister of Mauritania and the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam.
This morning, the Assembly heard addresses by the Presidents of Armenia and Cyprus, followed by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Trade of New Zealand and the Republic of Korea, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Egypt, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and Cooperation of Luxembourg, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada and the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam.
In the afternoon, the Assembly will hear statements by the Chairman of the Delegation of Estonia, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Prime Minister of Swaziland, Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Romania and Mongolia,, First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kuwait, as well as Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, Qatar, Liechtenstein, Iceland and Liberia.
Also during the meeting this afternoon, the President is expected to announce the schedule of the plenary for October and I will make it available to you as soon as that happens.
As I already announced last week, on Monday 28 September, the President will travel to Washington, DC to address the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States on the issue of new challenges before the United Nations. He will be back in the afternoon.
Also on Monday a working group of the Sixth Committee will begin its session which is to last until 9 October. The group has continued its metings in accordance with provisions of resolution 52/165 of15 December 1997, entitled "Measures to eliminate international terrorism".
