This morning the President is attending the opening session of the annual DPI/NGO Conference where he made an opening statement. It will be available as a press release later today. The list of his other appointments for the day is available in Room 378.
On Friday afternoon, the General Committee concluded the consideration of its recommendations regarding the organizational matters relating to the 53rd session. It is recommending to the Plenary the adoption of the agenda containing 167 items out of 171 originally submitted.
The General Committee recommended not to include one of the proposed items (166 -- Need to review GA resolution 2758(XXVI) of 25 October 1971 owing to the fundamental change in the International situation and to the coexistence of 2 Governments across the Taiwan Strait;
Delete another (62 -- Situation in Burundi) -- letter from Burundi A/53/290 of 24 August
Defer 2 items to the 54th session -- 92 (Question of Malagasy Islands of Glorieuses, Juan de Nova, Europa and Bassas da India; and 93 -- Situation in East Timor.
The proposed item on the fiftieth anniversary of the adoption of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (168) will become a subitem on the item on the fiftieth anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, but it would be considered at a separate meeting of the 3rd Committee.
All the recommendations of the General Committee will be issued as part of document A/53/250, which will be available tomorrow morning.
The Assembly will have a plenary meeting tomorrow to consider the recommendations of the General Committee.
