No plenary meetings are scheduled for today. Shortly before the beginning of the briefing, the 1998 Pledging Conference for Development Activities was concluded, so the figures on the pledges made should be available soon after the conclusion of this briefing. So far, I can tell you that 48 States pledged some US$ 52.2 million to UNICEF and US$ 55 million to UNFPA.
The First Committee will continue the whole day today to take action on all draft resolutions submitted under agenda items 63 to 80. So far this morning, it took action on six draft resolutions before it. The Second Committee will continue this afternoon with informal consultations on a series of draft resolutions. The Third Committee will continue the whole day the consideration of human rights questions. It is scheduled to hear this morning several introductory statements by Special Rapporteurs, some of them postponed from yesterday, including the Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia; Special Rapporteur on Internally Displaced Persons; Special Rapporteur on Torture; Special Rapporteur of the Secretary-General on the Situation of Human Rights in Rwanda; as well as the introductory statement on behalf of the Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights in Burundi. This afternoon, the Committee will take action on the draft resolution on the promotion and protection of the rights of children; on two drafts on the rights of peoples to self-determination; as well as on two drafts regarding the programme of activities of the International Decade of the World's Indigenous Peoples. Also, three drafts on the elimination of racism and racial discrimination will be introduced, as will be three draft proposals regarding the comprehensive implementation and follow-up to the Vienna Declaration and Programme of Action on human rights. The Fifth Committee is scheduled to hold informal consultations the whole day, this morning on the scale of assessments and this afternoon on the pattern of conferences. The Sixth Committee is also meeting the whole day. During the formal meetings it will continue the consideration of the report of the International Law Commission on the work of its fiftieth session, while the informal consultations will concentrate on the draft resolutions regarding the UN Decade of International Law, as well as the International Law Commission.
Tomorrow morning, the Fifth Committee will hold elections for appointments of members of ACABQ; Committee on Contributions; one member of the Board of Auditors; confirmation of the members of the Investment Committee; appointment of members of the UN Administrative Tribunal; appointment of members of the International Civil Service Commission and designation of its Chairman and Vice-Chairman.
