This morning, the Assembly is considering item 164, Causes of conflict and the promotion of durable peace and sustainable development in Africa. The Secretary-General was the first speaker.There are so far 36 speakers inscribed in the debate on this item, so the plenary will resume in the afternoon. A draft resolution on this item will be circulated at a later date. No plenary meetings are at this point scheduled for Monday.

This morning, the Special Political and Decolonization Committee elected one remaining Vice-Chairman from the Western European and Other States Group, which still leaves it to the Committee to elect the Rapporteur. It then proceeded with the hearings of petitioners on decolonization. The Second Committee is this morning concluding its general debate, with 13 final speakers. This afternoon it will take up consideration of item 91, regarding macroeconomic policy questions, and the Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs will make an introductory statement. Several reports on related issues are available. The Third Committee is today continuing consideration of issues of crime prevention and criminal justice (101) and international drug control (102), while the Fifth Committee will continue with informal consultations on a series of items.

On Monday, the First Committee will begin its general debate, while the Sixth Committee will also resume its work, as the working Group established pursuant to resolution 52/210 will conclude its session today.

The Credentials Committee will meet on 20 October.
