This morning, the plenary adopted without a vote the draft resolution 53/7contained in document A/53/L.8 and then proceeded with the elections of the judges for the third Trial Chamber of the International Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia. On the first ballot, no candidate obtained the absolute majority of 94 and the second, unrestricted ballot is in progress. The voting will continue in the afternoon if there is no resolution on the second ballot.

No plenary meetings are scheduled for Monday.

The First Committee is continuing its general debate today, with nine speakers inscribed for this morning and ten for this afternoon. The Second Committee this morning took aaction on several drafts regarding macroeconomic policy questions, namely on financing of development, including net transfer of resources between developing and developed countries; commodities; and external debt crisis and development. Also this morning, the Committee was scheduled to conclude its general discussion of operational activities. The Thrid Committee this morning took action on drafts on crime prevention and criminal justice; the international drug control; social development; and on crime prevention and criminal justice. It also continued its discussion of advancement of women and the implementation of outcome of the Fourth World Conference on Women.

This afternoon at 3:00 p.m. in conference room 2, in observance of International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, the Chairmen of the Second and Third Committee will co-preside over a panel discussion on the theme "Poverty, Human Rights and Development". The panellists will include the Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, Nitin Desai; Director of the NY Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Bacre Ndiaye; Diana Skelton of the ATD Fourth World International Movement; and the Executive Director of The Development Gap, Douglas Hellinger.

The Fifth Committee will hold informal consultations this morning on the support account for peacekeeping operations before resuming a formal meeting to take action on a draft resolution on this item. It will then resume onformal consultations on programme planning. The Sixth Committee will meet this afternoon to consider the report of the Special Committee on the Charter of the United Nations and on the Strengthening of the Role of the Organization.
